De Lorenzo Powers NDNU to Split with BYU Hawaii
March 26 – The Notre Dame de Namur softball picked up a split with BYU Hawaii thanks to Bria De Lorenzo’s four homeruns in Monday’s doubleheader. De Lorenzo belted her first homerun of the day in the sixth inning of the first game, before setting a school record with three homeruns and seven RBIs in the second game. Her final homerun, a grand slam in the sixth inning of game two busted the game wide open.
The Argos struggled to find their bats early in the first game, falling behind 7-0. BYU Hawaii used homeruns in Jana Dewey and Holly Bjork in the third to build their lead while pitcher Crystal De La Cruz held the Argos scoreless through five innings. NDNU closed the gap in the sixth with De Lorenzo’s first homeruns of the day but could not get any closer, falling 8-3.
The second game started out the same with the Seasiders scoring five unanswered runs in the first three innings. However, the Argos responded, scoring the games final 13 runs including nine in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. Trailing 5-1 in the fifth, Amy Paulson drove in a run with a triple before being brought home by De Lorenzo’s second homer of the game. In the sixth, the Argos tied the game with a bases loaded walk to Huson, and took the lead with a two-run single by Paulson. After Tara Van Meter walked to reload the bases, De Lorenzo blasted a grand slam over the left field fence to give NDNU a 11-5 lead. Anna Garza capped of the inning with a two-run homerun to give the Argos a 13-5 victory. Danielle Holt picked up her fifth win of the season, surrendering only two earned runs in six innings of work. Sonoma Sweeps Past Argos
March 14 - The Notre Dame de Namur softball team fell twice at the hands of Sonoma State in Monday's non-conference doubleheader. The Argos could not get the bats going, managing just four hits in the two games. Sonoma State took the first game 7-0 on a combined two hit shutout by Lindsay Emmel and Brittany Williams. The second game was much of the same as Simone Brandalise and Williams hurled another shutout on the way to a 5-0 victory. Lindsay Crist picked up two hits on the day for the Argos while Tara Van Meter and Milana Jordan delivered one each. Argos Struggle on Hawaii Trip
March 10 - The NDNU softball team struggled on their ten game Hawaii road trip over the past week, going 2-10. The Argos played four game apiece against Pac West foes Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo. The trip got off to a good start as NDNU took two of the first three against Chaminade, including a 6-1 victory in the first game. However, NDNU dropped their final game against the Swords and four each to HPU and Hawaii-Hilo.
Amy Paulson and Tara Van Meter led the Argos offense, combining for 21 hits, four homeruns and 12 RBIs. Paulson had two homeruns, seven hits and six RBIs in the first four games of the trip while Van Meter hit .484 with two homers and four RBIs over the final eight. RESULTS AND BOX SCORES
Humboldt Sweeps Argos in Doubleheader
February 19 - The NDNU softball team suffered a pair of defeats in their first home games of the season against Humboldt State. The Jacks took the first game 6-2 before beating the Argos 11-2 in five innings in the second game.
The Argos found themselves down early in the first game as HSU went up 1-0 on a wild pitch by Laurel Carstensen. The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when NDNU tied the game on a Bria De Lorenzo double. The Jacks would then score three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good. They would add two more in the seventh to push the score to 6-1. Humboldt pitcher Lizzy Prescott picked up the win, allowing just one run and striking out 13. Carstensen surrendered five earned runs in a complete game loss for the Argos. Nancy Harbeson delivered three hits and three RBIs for Humboldt. BOX SCORE
Humboldt picked up where they left off at the beginning of the second game, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings. NDNU pitcher Danielle Holt received the loss, surrendering all 11 runs (ten earned) in 2.1 innings. Cierra Kenney came on in relief to throw 2.2 scoreless frames. The Jacks scored four runs in the first on four hits and followed that up with five more runs in the second. They would add two more in the third before Amy Paulson put the Argos on the board with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the inning. Humboldt Cancels Softball Tournament
February 9 - The 2007 Best Western Humboldt Bay Inn Tournament has been cancelled due to the expectation of rain on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament was to feature NDNU taking on Humboldt and Western Oregon The games will not be rescheduled. The Argos are off to Phoenix next week to play in the Lead-Off Classic Tournament hosted by Grand Canyon from February 15-17.
Argos Earn Third Split at Best of the West Tournament
February 4 - The Notre Dame de Namur softball team picked up their third straight split at the Togo's Best of the West Tournament in Turlock, CA. The Argos dropped their first game of the day to Sonoma State 3-1, but rebounded with an upset over #22 Seattle University 4-2.
The Argos could not get anything going off Sonoma State pitcher Brittany Williams who allowed only one run in six innings. The Argos lone run came on a solo homerun by Tara Van Meter which tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second inning. NDNU pitcher Laurel Carstensen held the Seawolves to just the one run until the bottom of the sixth when they would plate the games final two runs to win 3-1. Carstensen hurled five innings, allowing just two earned runs but received her first loss of the season. BOX SCORE
In the second game, NDNU pulled off the upset of nationally ranked Seattle University with a 4-2 victory. Seattle struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. However, the Argos responded with four runs in the fifth to take and lead and never look back. Tara Van Meter picked up her second win of the season, allowing just two runs in seven innings. Van Meter also led the Argos at the plate, picking up a double and a triple and driving in a run. Kate Elwell went 3-3 for the game while Milana Jordan and Bria De Lorenzo each drove in a run. NDNU Splits Again on Day Two
February 3 - The NDNU softball team once again split a pair of games on day two of the Togo's Best of the West Tournament. Much like the first day the Argo bats could not get going in the first game, falling to CSU Dominguez Hills 6-0. NDNU would fair much better in game two, defeating UC San Diego 9-6.
In the first game the Toros' starting pitcher Jennifer Martinez kept the Argos silent at the plate, tossing a four hit complete game shutout. Martinez did not walk a batter and struck out eight. Friday's winning pitcher Tara Van Meter hurled her second complete game of the season, but allowed five earned runs. Jennifer Frazier collected three hits for Dominguez Hills and drove in a pair of runs. BOX SCORE
The Argos regrouped in the second game to take down UC San Diego with a nine run outburst. NDNU jumped out early, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, UCSD would not go away, taking the lead in the fourth on a three run homerun by Nikki Palmer. The Argos scored two in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-4, but the lead would not last as the Tritons brought home two of their own in the fifth. NDNU would put the game out of reach in the bottom half of the fifth, pushing across four runs to go ahead 9-6. Danielle Holt picked up the victory with five strong innings while Cierra Kenney recorded the save with a pair of scoreless frames. Amy Paulson led the Argos offense with a pair of hits, three runs and a RBI. Bria De Lorenzo also drove in a pair of runs for the Argos. BOX SCORE
