Argos Finish 10th at Sonoma State Invitational

October 21 – In their final tournament of the fall, the Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team finished 10th at the Sonoma State Invitational. The Argos opened up with 297 before moving into 6th place with a 284 in the second round. However, in the final round, the Argos shot 306 and moved back to 10th.

Ryan Sheffer was the top finisher with a 216 and tied for 18th place. Sheffer shot a tournament low seven-under-par 65 in the second round to move up to fourth after two rounds. His round of 65 was also a school record, beating Kory Storer’s previous record of 66 at the 2007 PacWest Championships.

Andrew Kitchings finished in a tie for 26th with a 219 while Brendan Jin placed 43rd. Tim McQuaid (56th) and Brandon Van Goethen (58th) rounded out the scoring for the Argonauts. RESULTS

Argos Place 10th at Western Washington

September 27 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team opened up their 2008 fall schedule with a 10th place finish at the Western Washington Invitational. The Argos shot back-to-back rounds of 303 in the 36-hole tournament that featured 11 teams.

Brian Moquin was the top finisher for NDNU, shooting a three-over-par 147 and tying for 25th place. Ryan Sheffer placed 37th with a 149 while fellow sophomore Brendan Jin shot a 154. Andrew Kitchings and Brandon Van Goethen rounded out the scoring for the Argos with 158 and 168 respectively.

Sonoma State took home the team title, edging Western Washington by four strokes with a 560. WWU’s Thomas Jun beat out Patrick Bauer for the individual crown with a six-under-par 138.

The Argos remain in Bellingham for the Division II Championship Preview hosted by Western Washington on Monday and Tuesday. RESULTS

Two NDNU Graduates Qualify for U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament

Belmont, CA, June 29, 2008—Two recent graduates of Notre Dame de Namur University, Kory Storer and Mike Prescott have qualified to compete in the U.S. Amateur golf tournament, scheduled to begin August 18 in Pinehurst, NC.

Both graduated this past May, Storer, 22, with a degree in Business Administration and Prescott, 23, with a degree in Communication. They both qualified for the U.S. Amateur by tying for second with scores of even-par 144 at a qualifying tournament held at the Peninsula Golf Club course in San Mateo, CA. For Storer, this will be his second trip to the U.S. Amateur. He qualified for the tournament in 2006.

“We’re excited for both Kory and Mike,” said NDNU athletic director Josh Doody. “They both have worked very hard to achieve this milestone and both represented this program and their school very well while they were students here.”

The two will join a field of more than 300 amateur golfers at Pinehurst Golf and Country Club for the tournament which will be held August 18-24. In order to even participate in the qualifying tournament, a golfer has to have a handicap index of 2.4 or better.

Men’s Golf Inks Two Recruits

July 11 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team has announced the signing of two recruits for the 2008-09 season. Tim McQuaid and Brandon Van Goethen will join an Argonauts team that returns three golfers from last season.

McQuaid comes to NDNU from Regis Jesuit HS in Englewood, Colorado. At Regis, he earned First Team All-League honors as a senior and was an Academic All-State Honorable Mention three times. McQuaid also helped lead his school to both a league and regional championship last season.

Van Goethen will join the Argonauts after earning Team MVP honors at Mater Dei HS in each of the last two seasons.

The Argonauts finished the 2008 season with a fourth place finish at the Pacific West Championships but will look to improve next season with the return of the PacWest Freshman of the Year, Ryan Sheffer.

Two Former Argos Win U.S. Open Local Qualifiers

May 19 – Former Notre Dame de Namur men’s golfers, Kory Storer and Joe Larson each won their U.S. Open local qualifiers and will advance to the sectional qualifiers in June.

Storer, the 2007 Pacific West Conference Golfer of the Year won the Santa Rosa qualifier with a 69 at Mayacama Golf Club.

Larson, a member of the Argonauts golf team from 2003-05 also advanced to the sectionals after winning the Sissonville, West Virginia qualifier with a round of 66.

If Storer and Larson can advance past the sectional qualifiers they will compete in the 2008 U.S Open held at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California. RESULTS

Argos Finish Fourth at PacWest Championships

April 23 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team closed out their 2007-08 season with a fourth place finish at the Pacific West Conference Championships. The Championships, held at Turtle Bay Golf Course in Hawaii featured all seven PacWest teams in a 72-hole tournament.

The Argos came out strong, posting a 307 in the first round and trailing only Grand Canyon for the lead. Mike Prescott fired an opening round 74 to tie for the tournament lead while Ryan Sheffer was in fourth with a 75.

The second round did not go as well for NDNU with a 319 dropping them back into third place. Sheffer continued his great play with a 76 to remain in fourth place with Kory Storer also shooting a 76 to move into the top-10.

NDNU struggled in the final round and fell to fourth after a 328 while Hawaii Hilo took home the Championship with a three round total of 902. Sheffer’s second 74 of the tournament kept him in fourth place with a total of 225. He finished just three stokes behind individual winner Zady Ari of Hawaii Hilo. Sheffer was the only Argonaut to break 80 in the final round.

Storer finished in a tie for 12th with Mike Prescott coming in 23rd place. Brian Moquin and Brendan Jin rounded out the NDNU lineup with a 26th and 29th place finish respectively. RESULTS

Argos Finish 5th at Buzzini/Stanislaus Invitational

April 15 – In their final tournament before the PacWest Championships next week, the Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team turned in an impressive performance at the Buzzini/Stanislaus Invitational. The Argos place fifth in a field of 16 teams and held the second place spot heading into the final round.

NDNU opened with a 294 which put them in ninth place heading into the second round. The Argos responded with a second round low 287 which pushed them into sole possession of second place. Ryan Sheffer’s career low 68 helped pace the Argos in the second, while Kory Storer also finished under-par for the round with a 71.

The third round was a different story as the Argos shot a 308 and fell back to fifth place. Sonoma State earned the team title, leading from start to finish while Jarin Todd (SSU) took home the individual title with an eight-under-par 208.

Sheffer and Storer were the top finishers for NDNU, tying each other for 12th with a 220. Brian Moquin tied for 23rd with a 224 while Mike Prescott and Brendan Jin shot 227 and 228 respectively.

The Argos close out the season next week when they travel to Kahuku, Hawaii for the Pacific West Conference Championships. RESULTS

Argos Earn 7th Place at Otter Invitational

April 8 – Mike Prescott turned in a top-10 finish as the Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team place 7th at the CSU Monterey Bay Invitational. The Argos used rounds of 312, 313 and 308 to shoot a 933 overall and finish just one shot back of sixth place.

Prescott’s 227 placed him just four strokes back of tournament winner Eric Justesen who fired a 223 while leading CSU Stanislaus to the team title. Prescott shot an opening round 76 before following up with a 74 to move within two strokes of the leader. In the final round, he shot a 77 to move him back to seventh.

Kory Storer (235) and Ryan Sheffer (237) finished 28th and 33rd respectively while Brendan Jin (238) and Brian Moquin (246) rounded out the NDNU scoring.

The Argos are back in action next week when they travel to Turlock to participate in the Buzzini Invitational. RESULTS

Argos Place 11th at Thunderbird Invitational

April 1 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team finished 11th at the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational held in Goodyear, Arizona. The Argos played exceptionally well in the first two rounds, shooting 295 and 293 respectively. However, a rough third round dropped NDNU from eighth in the 19-team tournament,

Kory Storer was the top Argonaut individual, finishing in a tie for 25th with a 220. Fellow senior Mike Prescott was two strokes back and tied for 38th. The best round for NDNU was turned in by Brian Moquin with a two-under-par, 70 in the second round. In addition to Moquin’s 69th place finish, freshman Ryan Sheffer and Brendan Jin placed 61st and 76th respectively.

Wayland Baptist won the 54-hole tournament with a total score of 845 while Kevin Stinson won the individual medal with an 11-under-par 205.

The Argos are back in action next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Seaside for the Williams Roofing Otter Invitational. RESULTS

Argos Tie for Seventh at NDNU Invitational,
Valdosta State Takes Title

March 11 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team used a solid third round to move from ninth place to seventh at the 2nd Annual NDNU Invitational. The 14 team tournament was played at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore and was won by Valdosta State.

The Blazers edged CSU Stanislaus by one stroke and CSU East Bay by two after entering the final round in fourth place. Valdosta shot three-under-par as a team in the final round and finished the tournament with a scored of 876.

Valdosta also had the individual winner as Brent Witcher fired a twelve-under-par, 204 to defeat CSU East Bay’s Jeff Murphy by four strokes. Witcher set a tournament record with a second round 64 and finished with a 68 in the final round.

Mike Prescott led NDNU with a 221 including a 69 in the final round to finish in 11th place. Kory Storer tied for 23rd with a 226 while Brendan Jin finished 33rd with a 228. Ryan Sheffer (239) and Brian Moquin (241) closed out the Argonauts scoring.

The Argos are back in action March 31st when they travel to Phoenix to play in the 23rd Annual Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Grand Canyon.

Argos Place 8th in Spring Opener

February 26 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team opened their 2008 spring schedule with an 8th place finish at the CSUB Poor Boy Invitational. The Argos shot an 18-over-par, 882 in the 54-hole tournament played at Seven Oaks Country Club in Bakersfield, California.

The Argos were in 8th place after each of the three rounds, shooting a 296 in the opening round before finishing with back-to-back rounds of 293.

Kory Storer was the top individual for NDNU, tying for 16th place with an even-par 216. Storer opened the tournament with a two-under-par, 70 before shooting a 74 in the second round and a 72 in the third.

Mike Prescott also broke the top-30 with a three-over-par 219 which tied him for 25th place. Ryan Sheffer finished in a tie for 31st with a 222 while Brandan Jin and Bryan Moquin tied for 51st.

CSU Stanislaus won the tournament with an 847 to defeat UCLA by one stroke. The Bruins had the top two individual finishers with Eric Flores firing a 10-under-par, 206 and Craig Leslie shooting nine-under-par.

The Argos are back in action on March 10-11 when they host the 2nd Annual NDNU Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, California. RESULTS

Argos Finish 10th at Dennis Rose Intercollegiate

October 30 – The defending champion Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team struggled in their attempt to repeat, finishing in tenth place at the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate. The Argos shot a 54-hole total of 930, three stokes behind PacWest rival Grand Canyon for ninth place.

Kory Storer was the top Argonaut individual, firing a 229 and tying for 31st place. Storer shot an opening round 69 to take possession of first place, but followed up his three-under-par round with a 79 and 81. Brian Moquin finished 48th with a score of 235 while Ryan Sheffer (51), Travis Peterson (52) and Mike Prescott (t-56) rounded out the NDNU golfers.

Kyle Hopkins from Sonoma State won the individual title in a playoff over teammate Jacob O’Keefe and CSU Stanislaus’s Andy Moran. All three golfers shot a 214 with Hopkins shooting a tournament best 66 in the second round.

The Argonauts concluded their fall schedule with this tournament and will pick up again in March when they host the 2nd Annual Notre Dame de Namur Invitational. The NDNU Invitational will be played at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore on March 10th and 11th. RESULTS

NDNU Places 5th at Sonoma State Invitational

October 23 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team turned in another impressive performance, finishing fifth at the Sonoma State Invitational. The Argos finished the ten-team, 54-hole tournament just 14 strokes behind winner Chico State.

Mike Prescott and Travis Peterson were the top individuals for NDNU, tying for 13th place with a 215. Both Precott and Peterson finished with two rounds under par while Kory Storer fired an Argonaut best 69 in the second round. Storer used his three-under-par second round to also crack the top-20, finishing in a tie for 19th. Freshman Ryan Sheffer just missed the top-21, placing in a tie for 21st with a 221 while Bryan Moquin shot a 225. The Argos also ended with the third best team round of the tournament, shooting a seven-under-par 281 in the second round.

The Argos are off to Hawaii next week to defend their 2006 title at the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate. RESULTS

Argos Place Sixth in Opening Tournament

October 16 – The Notre Dame de Namur men’s golf team started off their 2007 fall schedule with a sixth place finish at the InterWest Wildcat Classic. The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Chico State was held at Butte Country Club and featured nine schools. Wayland Baptist won the Classic with a three round score of 886 while the Argos totaled 926.

Mike Prescott was the top finisher for the Argonauts placing in a tie for 16th with a 229, eleven shots off individual winner Michael Loppnow. Kory Storer and Travis Peterson also placed in the top-20, shooting a 231 and tying in 20th place. Freshman Ryan Sheffer finished 34th in his first collegiate tournament while Brian Moquin placed 40th. Prescott and Peterson tied for the best individual round for NDNU, both shooting 73 in the second round.

The Argos are back on the course next Monday and Tuesday when they travel to Santa Rosa for the Sonoma State Invitational. RESULTS

Men’s Golf Recruit Wins Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship

August 20- Incoming freshman golfer Ryan Sheffer has already made some noise this summer after winning his first amateur tournament in June. Sheffer fired a 10-under-par, 203 to win the Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship.

Sheffer, a graduate from Salpointe High School in Tucson, Arizona overcame a three stroke deficit in the final round to win the Championship by three. He beat out 62 other junior golfers in the 54-hole stroke play event held at Angel Park Golf Club.

Sheffer is currently ranked as the 22nd overall graduating senior by the American Junior Golf Association and is highest ranked player going to a Division II school. He will be joined by Brendan Jin of Castro Valley High School, giving NDNU a pair of very talented freshman.

The Argonauts also return seniors Mike Prescott and Kory Storer as well as sophomore Travis Peterson to a team that ranked as high as 25th in the Golf World/Nike Coaches Poll last season. Prescott was recently named to the GCAA Division II PING All-West Region Team while Storer returns as the reigning PacWest Player of the Year.

Argos Rank 25th in Golf World/NIKE Division II Poll

April 25 - After a strong finish to the 2006-07 golf season, the Notre Dame de Namur men's golf team cracked the top 25 of the Golf World/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll for the first time in the schools history. The Argos finished in the top-10 of every tournament they participated in this season including the schools first title at the Mauna Lani Intercollegiate in Hawaii. CLICK TO VIEW POLL

Argos End Season with 8th Place Finish at CSU Stanislaus

April 17 – The NDNU men’s golf team closed out their 2006-2007 season with an eighth place finish at the CSU Stanislaus Buzzini Invitational. The 54-hole, 17 team tournament was held at the Turlock Golf and Country Club. The Argos started off strong, holding onto fifth place after the first two rounds and trailing second place by just four strokes. In Tuesday’s final round, the Argos struggled, shooting 312 and dropping back into 8th place. CSU Stanislaus won the tournament on their home course, firing a three-under-par, 861. Grand Canyon finished in second, 22 strokes behind the first place Warriors.

Pac West Golfer of the Year Kory Storer was the top Argo finisher, placing in a sixth place tie with a two-over-par 218. Storer finished a tournament best two-under-par on the par fours and had the most pars with 45. Mike Prescott had the low round of the tournament for the Argos, shooting a three-under-par 69 in the second round. Prescott finished in a tie for 22nd with a 224. Stanislaus’s Andy Moran won the individual title with a five-under-par 211. RESULTS

Argos Tie for Sixth at Monterey Bay

April 10 – The NDNU men’s golf team turned in another strong showing, finishing in a sixth play tie at the CSUMB Otter Invitational. The 54-hole, 14 team tournament was played at Blackhorse Golf Course in Seaside, California. The Argos fired an opening round 303, followed by a 313 in the second and a 306 in the final round to tie for sixth place with Florida Gulf Coast and Chico State. Washburn University won the team title with an 896 while Eric Justesen from CSU Stanislaus took home the individual medal with a one-under-par, 215.

Mike Prescott was the top finisher for the Argos, placing in tie for fourth with a 225, which included an opening round 71. Pac West Golfer of the Year, Kory Storer finished in a tie for 16th place with a 230 while Dean Henry’s final round 71 moved him into 30th place. Argos Finish Second in Pac West Championship,
Storer Wins Individual Title

April 3 - The Notre Dame de Namur men's golf team turned in a strong performance at the Grand Canyon Invitational which doubled as the Pacific West Championships. The Argos finished second in the Pac West, just seven strokes behind conference champion Grand Canyon. The Thunderbird Invitational, featuring 17 teams was won by Point Loma Nazarene, with NDNU finishing fifth.

The Argos opening round 291 placed them second in the Pac West before dropping to third after a 297 in the second round. In the final round, NDNU fired a 287 to move past Dixie State take home second place.

Kory Storer took home the individual title for the Pac West, shooting a nine-under-par 207. Storer set the Pac West 18-hole record with a stunning 66 on Monday morning, before shooting a 73 Monday afternoon. On Tuesday he posted the second-best conference championship round with a 68 and set a school record finishing nine-under-par for the tournament. Storer's overall score of 207 was one stroke behind Thunderbird Invitational winner Sam Cyr.

Storer’s victory earned him All-Pac West accolades and the Pacific West Conference Men’s Golf Athlete of the Year. Mike Prescott also earned All-Pac West honors finishing third with a 213. The Argos are back on the course next week at the CSU Monterey Bay Otter Invitational at Blackhorse Golf Course.

Grand Canyon Takes 1st Annual NDNU
Invitational, Argos Place 2nd

March 13 – The NDNU Invitational came to an end with the Grand Canyon men’s golf team winning the tournament by three stokes over Notre Dame de Namur. The 54-hole, Invitational played at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, California featured an 11-team field. The Antelopes were in front from the beginning, leading after each of the three rounds and finishing with a score of 886.

NDNU finished just behind Grand Canyon, carding an 889 and shooting a tournament best 288 in the second round. CSU Stanislaus (899) took fourth while Sonoma State and CSU San Bernardino finished tied for fourth with a 902.

Sonoma State’s Jarin Todd and Dixie State’s Brady Machin shared medalist honors with a 2-under 214 for the tournament. Kory Storer (NDNU), Blake Parks (Grand Canyon) and Kevin Wentworth (CSU East Bay) finished in a three way tie for third, each shooting a 1-over 217.

Mike Prescott (223) also finished in the top 10 for the Argos while Dean Henry shot the low round of the tournament, firing a 4-under 68 in the second round. Henry (229) finished tied for 20th while Travis Peterson (230) finished 23rd. The Argos recorded a tournament best 54 birdies with Henry tying for the individual best with 13.

Argos Place 6th in CSU Bakersfield Invitational

February 27 - The NDNU men's golf team had a strong showing in their first event of the spring. The team finished sixth at the CSUB Poor Boy Invitational that saw a field of 16 teams play 54 holes. The Argos started off strong with the second best score through 18 holes, but struggled in the final round. The team finished with a eleven-over-par 875, just eight shots back of second place. UCLA took him the team medal, shooting 25-under-par for the tournament.

Travis Peterson finished in the tie for 10th place, shooting one-under-par for the tournament. Kory Storer shot one-over-par to tie for 15th place. The men are off until March 12-13 when they host the 1st Annual Notre Dame de Namur Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, CA. RESULTS

NDNU WINS MAUNA LANI
Argos Take Home First Title in School History

October 31 - Travis Peterson and Garrett Baxley’s top ten finishes helped Notre Dame de Namur capture their first ever tournament victory, winning the Mauna Lani Resort/UH Hilo Intercollegiate Championship held at Mauna Lani Golf Course.

The Argos topped the 13-team field in the three round tournament by shooting an 866 (+2) as a team. NDNU finished ahead of five teams that were separated by only two strokes. CSU Stanislaus (289-287-296) and Sonoma State (286-292-294) each shot 872, six shots behind the Argonauts. Hawaii-Hilo (290-298-285) and Cal State Bakersfield (298-290-285) finished one stroke behind them at 873, while CSU San Bernardino shot 874. NDNU found themselves in fourth place after an opening round 293 (+5), but were able to move into third after scoring 287 (-1) in the second round. Still trailing CSU Stanislaus by four strokes and Sonoma State by two, the Argos fired a 286 (-2) to pass both teams.

The freshman duo of Peterson (2nd place) and Baxley (9th place) carried the Argos to victory on the par 72 course. Peterson shot 70 in both the first and second round before finishing up with a 72 to conclude the tournament at 212 (-4). Baxley ended the tournament at 217 (+1) after shooting 74-72-71 in the three rounds. Kory Storer finished 19th (73-72-75=220), while Dean Henry (76-73-73=222) and Mike Prescott (77-75-70) tied for 29th place.

Sonoma State’s Jarin Todd (73-65-70=208) held onto his first-day lead to take medalist honors by four strokes. Central Arkansas’ Matt Montgomery and CSU Bakersfield’s Chris Kwon tied Peterson for second place with 212. The Argos will pick up their season again in March at the UC San Diego Invitational.
