The Art Therapy Psychology Department at Notre Dame de Namur University is the only one of its kind in Northern California that offers licensing as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). The focus in the department is on the family as a framework for human structure, emphasizing art and image as the canvas for its expression. The department is unique because it provides two courses of study if pursuing a master's degree, both of which emphasize theoretical and experiential learning. These courses are:
The Master of Arts in Art Therapy program prepares students who wish to be eligible to become Registered Art Therapists (ATR) but do not intend to pursue clinical licensing.
The Master of Arts in Marital Family Therapy prepares students for state licensure as an MFT in California and allows recipients to sit for state boards in over 45 states. This degree program meets the guidelines established by the California Board of Behavioral Science.
All programs in NDNU’s Art Therapy Program are approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).
See the NDNU General Catalog for program requirements and course descriptions.
The Art Therapy Psychology Department draws applicants from around the world; more than 30% of students come from outside of California. NDNU’s Art Therapy Psychology students are interested in creativity and how it promotes healing.
