Teacher Education (Credentials)
Notre Dame de Namur University's Department of Education:
Winner of the 1999 Smithsonian Institution Award for Technology Innovation for its collaborative program, "Touch the Future: Teach a Child."
For almost fifty years, Notre Dame de Namur University has maintained a reputation for excellence in teacher education. The objective of the Department of Teacher Education is to prepare competent teachers, specialists, and administrators through professional programs that reflect current trends. Personalized attention and individualized counseling for students, field orientation of programs, and successful placement of credential graduates have characterized the program since its inception in 1953. It was reaccredited with distinction in 1998. We have credential reciprocity with most states. Teacher Education at NDNU offers the following programs:
- Reading Credential and Certificate
- Multiple Subject Credential
- Single Subject Credential
- Special Education Credential
- Administrative Services Credential
- Continuing Education
Advanced Studies in Education and Leadership (Master's degrees)
Each Master's Program includes 30 units of advanced study of research and practice in the areas of teaching, learning, technology, social justice, diversity, and equity. Each of the MAT programs culminates with a thesis project – – a form of teacher research that demonstrates scholarly knowledge, skill, and habits of inquiry. The MA in Special Education does not require a thesis; it requires a capstone project, as does the M.A. in Reading.
If you are a recent graduate of Notre Dame's credential program (1999 or later), you may have a unique opportunity to count up to five of your credential courses toward your master's degree. This significantly reduces the time and financial resources required to earn a master's degree. Contact Dr. Kim Tolley at (650) 508-3464 for additional information regarding this opportunity.
Master's courses are taught by faculty representing diverse academic and practical expertise. As a student in the master's program, you will experience personalized instruction and mentoring, ensuring that the program supports you in your efforts to accomplish your personal and professional goals. Courses are available during both summer sessions as well as the fall and spring semesters. Courses are offered late in the afternoons/evening and on weekends in order to accommodate work commitments. Once you are admitted to the program, your advisor will work with you to create a program plan that meets your needs. Advanced Studies in Education and Leadership at NDNU offers the following programs:
- Master of Arts in School Administration
- Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
- MA in Special Education
- MA Reading
The School of Education and Leadership recently developed a credential in reading education. This course of study may be incorporated into the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in the form of an area of emphasis.
